“Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.” Hebrews 12:15
Just what is bitterness? It involves anger, disappointment, and being treated unfairly. According to the Bible “it involves emotion stemming from perceived injustice or hurt, evolving into a festering resentment, anger, and ill will, that can poison one’s spiritual life and relationships.” Bitterness is a poison. It is ruthless, and if not destroyed and thrown out of our lives, it can destroy the very essence of our relationships with others and even with our God in heaven. Jesus, as he walked this earth, had many opportunities to allow bitterness to grow within Him. However, he took the high road, and instead of growing bitter, he forgave those who did bad things to him. What Jesus did was the harder of the two options. It is difficult to forgive someone who does something bad to you. But that is what Jesus did and that is what he wants us to do. If we allow for evil bitterness to ingrain itself in us, then we are allowing the devil to win the battle. With poison in our system, we are unable to communicate honestly and unable to communicate with the love that Jesus presents to us. It may be time for us to begin to evaluate our lives. Take out the microscope and look for the evils that are hindering your relationship with others. Take the medicine of praying every day for God’s help. Take time to listen to the Holy Spirit as he communicates with you. Bitterness is a poison that will contaminate our every thought, word and deed if allowed to. Be strong and take the time to honor God by forgiving instead of carrying a grudge. PRAISE THE LORD IN ALL THINGS!
